Aider
Aider is an open-source CLI that edits a Git repo with the model you configure. It makes commits as it goes. The tool is free; model API usage is not. Docs live at aider.chat.
7.7
Preliminary
Editorial score out of 10. Not a benchmark.
What we tried
Installed it, pointed it at a repo with a Git history, and asked for a small refactor. It proposed a commit. Setup is the fiddly part if you do not already have an API key.
Scores are preliminary editorial notes from a short hands-on pass. They are not benchmark results, not pass rates, and not for sale. A shared task suite is not published yet, so we do not print speed, cost, or success-rate figures.
Preliminary notes
- Setup6/10
- Editing8/10
- Agent work8/10
- Docs and control8/10
Good fit
- People who want a model-agnostic CLI and real commits
- Repo work you can review as Git diffs
Limits
- You bring your own model key and you pay that bill
- Less of a polished editor than Cursor or Windsurf
